Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. (Romans 13:8 NRSV)
All the deeds of love that we perform in our daily lives flow forth as a response to Christ's prior and premier love for us. We love because God first loved us. This love that comes down from above frees us to focus on those around us.
With the ever-present media and spotlighting of the dramatic, we are tempted to become too infatuated with macro-impact deeds. We focus on solving world hunger. We see one millionaire tackling a disease in Africa. We marvel at one soccer player scoring multiple goals and bringing positive publicity to a part of New Jersey.
But what about the micro-impact deeds that flow forth from God's people in the millions? What about those who return calls and e-mails with care and reasonable timing? What about those who arrive at appointments on time? What about those who complete forms honestly and thoroughly? What about citizens of the household who regularly pick up and clean up after themselves? What about those who drive safely without fidgeting or texting? What about those who are mindful of others during a meeting and share only enough input as necessary?
When we think about the love commandment getting done from the micro-impact vantage point, it becomes more encouraging for disciples. For micro-impact deeds of love performed by many of the faithful does have a macro-impact.
Thanks be to God!
Let us pray... Loving God, help us to see and appreciate that the small, daily deeds of love do have a big impact in your world. Amen.
