Cacophany

Remember the love
(Oh, you got to, you got to remember the love)
Remember the love
(You know that love is a gift from up above)
Remember the love
(Share love, give love, spread love)
Measure in love
(Measure, measure your life in love)
Seasons of love
Seasons of love
(Measure your life, measure your life in love)
Jonathan D. Larson (Rent)

Disclaimer: This incident occurred before the able leadership of the Ewing High School choruses by Jennifer Forness.

One word recurs constantly through these lyrics, as well as the lyrics of countless songs and poems. It can be defined in as many ways as it can be experienced by each individual.

Many years ago, this song from Rent served as the finale of the Ewing High School musical concert. The harmony throughout the piece sounded breathtaking, and the mingled voices enticingly led up to the last three lines, emphasizing the anticipation for the last word: Love.

The orchestra swelled, and each singer and listener drew in a deep breath in preparation for the glorious commingling of sound. The expectation of harmony quickly shattered, as it appeared each singer went off key in his or her own, individual fashion. Instead of an amazing end to the concert, it was a gasp-worthy cacophony. I remember clapping my hands over my ears, as the choir director's expression evolved from surprise, to horror, to anger.

All the other music from that event has slipped from memory, and only that last note remains. A recurring theme of the month of February deals with love in all its forms. Some forms seem forgettable, and others can shape an entire life, evolving in dissonance and harmony. Love can destroy and sustain. At the finale of one's life, who and what that person loved reigns paramount.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.
But the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 13:13 New International Version (NIV)
