Love has come—a light in the darkness!
Love shines forth in the Bethlehem skies.
See, all heaven has come to proclaim it;
hear how their song of joy arises: Love! Love!
Born unto you, a Savior! Love! Love!
Glory to God on high. (“Love Has Come” Evangelical Lutheran Worship, 292)
At a Bible study I attended earlier today, I gathered with other Lutheran pastors to study the scripture texts for Christmas Eve. During our conversation, one person asked, “What difference does the incarnation make for our people?” That is, what difference does Jesus Christ, come into the world, make for the lives of everyday folks?
The answer continually circled back around to the text of the hymn, “Love Has Come.” Jesus born into the world, and into our lives, is the very heart of God.
Love is born! Come, share in the wonder.
Love is God now asleep in the hay.
See the glow in the eyes of his mother;
what is the name her heart is saying? Love! Love!
Love is the name she whispers; Love! Love!
Jesus, Immanuel.
Not descending from heaven high above on a cloud or chariot, but being delivered through childbirth. Not demonstrating unimaginable power through intimidation or the mighty arm of the heavenly host, but in the cry of a baby born of a young unwed mother. The heart of God comes down into the world, and to you!
You are loved. Deeply. Without regard for what you bring, or buy, or earn. Knowing that you are loved by a God who sent the son down to earth, changes our perspective, our relationships, and our lives. Everything.
Love has come and never will leave us!
Love is life everlasting and free.
Love is Jesus within and among us.
Love is the peace our hearts are seeking. Love! Love!
Love is the gift of Christmas. Love! Love!
Praise to you, God on high!
Amen.
