While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” (Matthew 17:5)
It’s a holy interruption, this divine voice that spoke at Jesus’ Transfiguration. The words come in the midst of the nitty gritty of Jesus’ ministry. In the midst of healings and Peter’s confession of faith and teaching and Jesus’ telling about his future suffering comes this holy interruption. This is my Son. The one who is shining, transfigured before you. The one whom you have been following. The one who fed the multitudes. The one who healed the sick. The one who debates with the elders. The one who keeps talking about death and resurrection. This is my Son, the Beloved.
These words interrupt our lives as well. Our busy lives. Our lonely lives. Our joyful lives. Our lives filled with sorrow. Our lives filled with sin. These words interrupt our lives, pointing out one who is with us in the midst of our lives. Pointing to none other than the Son of God, the one with power to calm the busy, to comfort the lonely, to rejoice with the joyful, to bear our sorrows, to forgive our sin.
Gracious God, grant us eyes to see your Son in our midst. Give us ears to hear the announcement of his presence. Amen
