Advent, Just in Time

I am glad that the Advent season has arrived. I am especially glad that Advent has arrived in the midst of the violence erupting in Ferguson, Missouri and in other places in this country.

I am glad for Advent in a seemingly never-ending news cycle of rampaging ISIS militants, tragically overflowing refugee camps on the Syrian-Turkish border; devastating sickness caused by the Ebola virus, and the mean circumstances of Palestinians and Israelis dying in a never ending political stalemate. I am glad that the Advent season has arrived.

I am glad for Advent even in the midst of midnight-madness sales and the annual countdown of shopping days left until Christmas. I am glad because Advent reminds us that time is not running out, it is filling up with God’s presence and purpose and passion. I am so glad for the hope that reminder brings!

I rejoice in knowing that God’s Kingdom, God’s Reign comes on God’s time and as God’s doing, not mine. I only pray that it will come quickly and that I will show some evidence of its advent in my own life.

I am glad that the Advent season has arrived with days and scripture readings and hymns that point us toward a time long ago in Bethlehem and the advent of God in Jesus the Christ. I am glad for an Advent season that points us toward a future that God holds for us. I am glad for an Advent season that calls us to live into God’s future now, with faith and courage and hope that overflows in compassion for our neighbors. I am glad for the opportunity to be part of the evidence of the Kingdom of God. As Jesus announced:

“The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” (Mark 1:15)

Let us pray: Stir up your power, O Lord, and come. By your Spirit fill us with hope and give us the courage to be evidence of your reign in the world. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
