"There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."    (Luke 21:25-28 NIV)

For Ken Howard, a true voice of faith

For eons uncounted, humanity has longed for a savior to appear, to give meaning and significance to our lives and deaths, and to justify our faith and yearning. As Advent begins, candles flicker and wreathes adorn our dwellings. The days grow shorter, and darkness envelopes us earlier. The coming of winter cannot be denied, evidenced by the chill winds and falling temperatures.

The candles symbolize hope for the return of the light, the warmth, and joy, while the wreaths speak of the strength in circles, communal gathering, and shared contentment and sorrow. Every Advent season represents simultaneously the wait for the Savior, the imminent celebration of the anniversary of His birth, and the hope for His triumphant return.

Temporal life brings pain, uncertainty, and grief blended with contentment and fulfillment. Luke warns us of the upheaval and fear which will precede the time for which all believers long. He counsels us to stay the course, and be prepared for the promised redemption. The light of the sun and Son will return, heralding a Spring unsurpassed in beauty and peace.

Father in heaven,
our hearts desire the warmth of your love
and our minds are searching for the light of your Word.
Increase our longing for Christ our Savior
and give us the strength to grow in love,
that the dawn of his coming
may find us rejoicing in his presence
and welcoming the light of his truth.
