For where two or three are gathered in my name,
I am there among them

Matthew 18:20

I find group behavior interesting.

During a long lay-over in an airport during the recent holidays, I occupied myself with the universal choice - people watching. Airport crowds have a certain demeanor regardless of the season. Although we all are either "arriving" or "departing", we are alone in that mission. Very little interaction or recognition with each other. Everyone is in their own bubble.

The crowds in the malls are similar. Except for teenagers, the rest of us are on a mission, shopping. Serious stuff ! Trying to be as efficient as possible, with no reason to communicate or bond.

Sporting events show some signs of improvement, that is unless you are seated in the midst of the opponents fans.

But so different in our church community.

We are there as one, and with each other. We have a common goal and are reaching for it with those around us. We sing together. We pray together, and for each other. We commune as one and listen to the word together. We gather with a sense of purpose and celebration that we carry with us the entire week. It frames our lives.

Our Christmas dinner was true evidence of our togetherness. We shared the meal and the music and finally gathered in one grand circular bond. A wonderful illustration of our union and common commitment.

We thank you Lord for nurturing our community of faith. Amen.
