"There are three things that are too amazing for me,
four that I do not understand:

the way of an eagle in the sky,
the way of a snake on a rock,
the way of a ship on the high seas,
and the way of a man with a maiden.

Proverbs 30:18-19 (NIV)

The author of this proverb is enviable in that only four things defied his understanding. An ungraspable infinity of concepts hover beyond the comprehension of most. That God can at once exist as three in one and one in three escapes the human ken. As an explanation, the fact that water can appear as ice, liquid or vapor (steam), but still remain water, serves to transfer the divine to a material concept. Yet, how can the same water appear in its three stages at the same moment? Temporal factors such as temperature, pressure and environment affect the state of the water, and perhaps other abstract forces determine the nature of the Trinity.

Perhaps the Trinity can best be experienced, rather than understood, as an emotional rather than physical idea. After all, it has often been said that we cannot see the wind itself, but its effects are visible. The mysteries described in Proverbs, while incomprehensible, surely stay eternally beautiful, as remain the interaction of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, both as singly and in unison.

"To try to deny the Trinity endangers your salvation,
to try to comprehend the Trinity endangers your sanity!"
Martin Luther

There exist many unfathomable mysteries, which can never be scientifically explained, and an explanation would detract from their loveliness. The Trinity shines most beautifully when viewed through the prism of Faith. We espy glimpses of the work of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and can only trust in the workings of the Trinity.

O most holy Trinity, Almighty God, we adore You, who give life and vigor to every creature and who shed light eternal where there is darkness. We offer you our hearts, our souls, and our whole being, today and on the days to come, that we may offer perfect praise and love to your glorious Name. Amen.
