"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid."
John 14: 27
Jesus is explaining to His followers that His peace is the only peace we need in this world. It is more precious than worldly treasures or concerns that we have. Think of our hearts being content with the love and joy of Christ.
This week, for me, has been the most stressful at work. Customer service is great when you can resolve issues but is frustrating when it is beyond your control. I worked extra hours to make a difference to the demands not for the money. Looking for peace in my world of work was not there. I needed to force myself to take a break, close my eyes and pray. I started to see things a little differently. Others around me were just as frustrated as I was, I was not alone. I reminded myself this was only a job and I could appreciate my home, church and family. The next day I had lunch with a friend and took a walk admiring the sunset. Just taking the time to ask for Christ's peace through the Holy Spirit made a difference for me.
Today, we remember Dr. Martin Luther King, a peacemaker who made a difference with only a dream. His dream and our dream of walking and working together with all people, no matter their race. A concept not of this world but only in Christ.
Although, Christ was preparing the way for His cross and resurrection for His followers, it was a hard concept to grasp in this world. I find it amazing that Christ knew what this human race needs. Too much stress can lead to heart problems. All we need is the precious gift of Christ's peace.
Heavenly Father, we are so grateful for the only peace you gave us in Jesus. We need to be reminded that we belong to You and not of this world. Our daily pressures and stress need to be relieved each day and renewed with Your Spirit. Guide us to walk Your path with all people making Dr. King's dream a reality. In Christ's peace, Amen.
